Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced plans to establish a multi-stakeholder team addressing rising student unrest nationwide. He said increasing school fires and protests have disrupted learning across several secondary schools recently.
Ogamba made the announcement while speaking during an event held in Meru County on Sunday, June 28. He said the task force will unite education stakeholders to develop lasting solutions for the recurring problem.
The team will include parents, teachers, religious leaders, school sponsors, and relevant government representatives from across Kenya. Ogamba said every stakeholder must participate actively to restore discipline and improve learning environments nationwide.
“We’ve agreed that we are going to form a multi-stakeholder team to discuss issues affecting students,” Ogamba stated. He urged stakeholders to work together towards ending the persistent unrest affecting learners across Kenyan schools.
Ogamba said authorities recognized that solving student unrest requires collective responsibility from every education sector stakeholder. He maintained collaboration remains essential for developing practical strategies addressing the underlying causes of indiscipline.
The announcement follows growing concern over repeated school unrest incidents and destructive fires reported across several counties. Some incidents have caused fatalities, extensive property damage, and prolonged learning disruptions in affected institutions.
One tragic incident occurred at Uthumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, where sixteen students lost their lives. Authorities have also reported numerous dormitory fires and student protests across schools during recent months.
